In Society
Chief among the many charming functions with which Miss Chatham entertaned her house party was the patriotic ball on Thursday night. In which more than thirty couples participated. The dining room of the Majestic hotel was cleared for action, and decorated with the national colors until it presented a scene of beauty that would thrill each patriotic heart. The windows and arches were curtained with American flags. the walls were decorated with starry banners and shields. In an alcove was a table adorned with the red-white-and-blue, and here little Miss Frances Doty , attired as a youthful Goddess of Liberty, dispensed delicious punch. "Old Glory" held sway everywhere, its brilliant colors forming a fit setting to the revelry.
The grand march was led by Mr. E. F. Smith and Miss Mamie Blount and was a maze of intricate an graceful figures where in the Stars-and-Stripes also had a part. As they passed along each of the participants received a flag and the march wound up with a grand triumphal arch formed of these fluttering banners.
Then followed the distribution of programs into which a unique idea had been introduced. The various numbers were embellished by the names of the guests of honor. The program front cover was inscribed:
